I agree that women do still do more housework than men, but the advert still really grates – it seems to accept the idea that a woman should be doing the washing, so it’s just that this guy is great that he’s doing it, rather than doing something which should be a shared workload…

I don’t expect McCoys to suddenly be making adverts about balancing housework, obviously. But then, I never expected there to be a connection between a brand of crisps and doing the washing before – it’s a pretty dull thing to associate yourself with, don’t you think? If you eat these crisps, you too can do the washing! They will give you super-human housework abilities!

Now that I mull over it a bit more, however, I’m a bit ambivalent. Statistically, women still do more housework than men. I don’t think messages like this help that fact, though. Rather, they reinforce the idea that women are really the ones who should be doing housework.
