I have neglected you. It was my exams and then my birthday, then my party and, immediatly after, a 5day trip to Paris, which I returned from on Friday, only to return to work on Sat and Sun! So I’ve had no time for a breather until now… I hope to return in even more detail now that I have the Summer (although even this is proving rather less free and rather more busy than anticipated), and to keep you going I give you this to mull over:
Yeah, I know. Hideous, huh?

Oh wow. Just… wow. If this is in Canada, I can totally see this commercial being mentioned somewhere in my vicinity in the near future by someone who thinks how “funny” it is.
Now that I mull over it a bit more, however, I’m a bit ambivalent. Statistically, women still do more housework than men. I don’t think messages like this help that fact, though. Rather, they reinforce the idea that women are really the ones who should be doing housework.
Okay, never mind, the ambivalence is gone. Sometimes free writing offers the most clarity, I find, so people can trace your thoughts. And… I’m done. Your summer certainly sounds nice! I’ve got you on my RSS feed, so I’ll see whenever you post. Enjoy yourself!

Thanks Derek
You got a good summer ahead? I’m really behind on my blog reading, but yours is top of the list to catch up on!
I agree that women do still do more housework than men, but the advert still really grates - it seems to accept the idea that a woman should be doing the washing, so it’s just that this guy is great that he’s doing it, rather than doing something which should be a shared workload…
I don’t expect McCoys to suddenly be making adverts about balancing housework, obviously. But then, I never expected there to be a connection between a brand of crisps and doing the washing before - it’s a pretty dull thing to associate yourself with, don’t you think? If you eat these crisps, you too can do the washing! They will give you super-human housework abilities!
Weird.
Reminds me of this great cartoon though…
