makes me sick. But it’s always there, and complaining about it gets so darn tiresome. And ruins the breaks between perfectly decent, non-sexist programmes (cos there actually are a few…)
This one has really got me riled, and I didn’t even see it on TV, but on The F-Word
It is very distressing that this has been shown on tv. It’s like, we have a society that is supposedly gradually moving forwards, we have laws against things like sexism and yet advertising is allowed to ignore them and appeal to everyone’s sexist, prejudiced sides. If only there were more of us who don’t have them!
Oh goodness. I just found this and I feel really, really unwell now. I simply can’t understand why people would want to do something like this:
and this is ridiculous (the oh-so-rare-but-still-so-wrong objectification of men…) :
and perleeeeese, this is so stupid:
On a brighter (kinda) note, in America tomorrow they are doing something marvellous - a Day of Silence “to highlight the bullying and harassment of LGBTQ students, and their supporters”, something which has apparently been going on since 1996. If I’d only known earlier I’d have tried to organise something - as it is, all I can do is say props to those who are doing it in America, I think it’s wonderful and I wonder why England hasn’t followed suit. I only wish that such a day weren’t necessary in the first place.
See more in this vid, which is amazing and has my favourite actor from Grey’s Anatomy in it (he plays George :D)

And on that note - Adieu!

Hahahaha, I thought you meant The F word as in Gordon Ramsay, and that it would be an article about Pot Noodles being shit, lol.
I saw it for the first time quite a while ago. It’s not very pleasant really. I for one will never buy one again (I’ve only had like one in the past decade, but still).

That Pot Noodle advert is the worst advert ever not to mention the fact it’s sexist throughout. I was exploring through the links you posted and found The F Word site and from there found another link and then a comment…..
Anyway, to cut a long story short what I found caused me to post a blog which I haven’t done in ages! I’d be interested to hear your opinion on it!
See you tomorrow!

The first two were pretty sick, the third, however, reminded me of torchwood (funny) and the fourth I have seen before and find amusing. But the last I liked and fully support, having grown up in and endured an extremely racist community, I would like it to end.

and homophobic and sexist might I add…

I suppose it was a very backwards place but that is no excuse.

How did the third remind you of Torchwood?!
Yeah I agree that the last is less bad than the first two, as it seems to actually be the effect of alcohol. It’s just the ‘ideal woman’ image that it promotes, suggesting that the woman he is actually with is not worth dating…
And no, there’s no excuse for sexism, racism or homophobia in society. I’m sorry that you had to live in such a negative community.

Right, my Firefox is screwed so I couldn’t see those videos (or any…it’s very inconvenient) until I resorted to IE a couple of minutes ago (I feel dirty). I makes rather more sense now, lol.
I think it’s a little unfair to say that the objectification of men is ‘oh-so-rare’, particularly in advertising. Watch a couple of hours of ITV or Channel 4 (painful as that may be), and I can guarantee you’ll find a good deal of it. It’s just not as common as the objectification of women.

Examples?
I for one have not seen many adverts with men being objectified - I normally remember as they choose men who are conventionally very attractive. I’m crap at remembering what adverts are for, but there was one for some form of chocolate (aero?) which had a…oh yeah found it. He even addresses the viewers as ‘ladies’…LINK and the coke one…which is crap for men and women…LINK
and from that there’s a link to this LINK
So, three. Out of all the adverts around. Sure there are more, but they are rare. Especially in comparison with the amount which objectify women…

That one for perfume (Lacoste I believe) with a naked guy running around immediately springs to mind. Various ones for razors (appealing to women to buy for their men), which imply that in order to shave one has to be almost naked, extremely well built and preferably a celebrity. A certain deodorant ad I think we all remember. I won’t waste my afternoon dredging up any more shite adverts from the recesses of my mind. They’re not rare at all, there are just fewer than their female equivalent. Come on Caitlin, just because you could only think of three doesn’t mean there are only three ‘out of all the adverts around’. I could link three female objectification ads and say that’s all there is. Honestly, that’s not up to the standard of disputation I’ve come to expect of you

You obviously haven’t seen how sexualized torchwood is…

Lol, true. Torchwood is crazily sexualized…but rarely women objectifying men, interestingly. Hey ho. Welcome to my blog, by the way.

Jake - I said: “Sure there are more, but they are rare.”
I didn’t say they were the only ones, they were the only ones I could remember.
The Lacoste advert is just…oh right, now I’ve found the one you mean. Normally Lacoste is alright, just has a man or a woman wandering around - there’s the one with the guy by the sea and the one with the woman trying to catch a kite but I agree, the one with the naked guy is objectifying him. Razor ones generally just have a guy shaving. Shows his head and neck. And normally at the end a woman appears and kisses him, or strokes his chin or something. I think rather than being aimed at women buying for their husbands, the message they try to get across is ‘this is what you have to do to be attractive. Look, see, if you shave a pretty women will kiss you. Magic.’ It’s ridiculous, but then I don’t think that the advertising companies would agree with my solution - adverts where they just have a picture of the product and a voice over that says, oh I dunno, ‘This is a razor. Use it to shave your face. It’s sharp.’ interspersed with cool adverts like the one with all the bits of the car knocking each other over…of course, they’d need me to decide which ones were cool
Hell, it’d be better if there were no advertising for products at all.
I dunno though, I just think that men aren’t often objectified in adverts. Which is great, I only wish the same were true for women. (Scrap that, I wish there was no objectification full stop)
And I honestly don’t remember the deodorant advert you mean! Remind me…I’ve probably removed it from my mind to protect my sanity

Chocolate man for Lynx chocolate. Though obviously not objectification of the male form.
Yeah, I’ve always said the lengths to which advertisements go are ridiculous. I’d be a lot happier with ‘here’s a car…buy it.’
I know you added that caveat, but your statement ‘out of all the adverts around’ is what I take issue with, as it implies that there are only three, and that in the distant past there may have been more (which reminds me, have a look at this LINK …hilarious advertising of deodorant called Brut 33 from twenty or thirty years ago).
Anyway, I think we’re agreed that commercial advertising should sod off.

Yes indeed - go away advertising and all you stand for!
And my apologies for not wording it correctly. I agree, it wasn’t quite what I meant.

Just that particular ad
As has been postulated before at one of our gatherings (I think), they need their constant controversial adverts as their product is crap.
Indeed…I look forward to the next one (hell, it’s better than work :P)
